LG 42LD550 42-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV Review

This is my first HDTV, so keep that in mind – I was bound to be wowed by HD, no matter what the TV. But I really like this one. It has excellent specs (high contrast ratio, 2.7ms response time, 120 Hz) and a ‘picture wizard’ that seemed to do a great job in calibrating the picture settings. It supports the latest HDMI specs, and has some nice features like Real Cinema (which maintains film’s 24 frames per second when watching a movie with a compatible source), and also the ability to tweak the settings of TruMotion, LG’s image interpolation system.

Interpolation is what ’smooths out’ video on HDTVs – it actually creates additional frames on the fly to fit between the existing frames of the source, and it’s what can give HD material that documentary/soap opera quality. Sometimes that’s desirable, but other times it just looks bad and cheesy. This TV has Low, High, and User settings for this feature. I was able to tweak the User setting to a good compromise, that smooths out some of the blur and ‘judder’ effect of normal video, but doesn’t make it look artificial. There are lots of other settings to tweak, for audio (downmix preferences, dynamic range, etc.) and everything else. This brings up the user interface. The menu system on the TV is very user friendly, and graphically attractive. The remote control is one of the best I’ve used – it has just enough buttons, while being well-laid out and thin and light, and fits nicely in the hand. The ‘arrow pad’ to move left/right etc. has comfortable buttons and works well (remotes often screw that section up, for some reason, but not this one).

My favorite feature has to be the networking/Internet capability of this TV. When I bought this TV (at a store) it came with a free Wi-Fi USB stick, so it was a good deal, but be aware that on its own the wi-fi stick is an unreasonable -80, and you can’t just use any old USB adapter, it has to be a special LG one – at least it seems to work very well and it’s N or G capable. Or, you can also use the TV’s wired ethernet port – even a 50′ ethernet cable would be cheaper than the wi-fi stick. In either case I think it’s well worth the cost to unlock the TV’s networking capability. Built into the TV are the streaming Netflix interface, VuDu, YouTube access, and more, including Yahoo Widgets – this lets you access your Yahoo account and any associated widgets, like Twitter, weather info, stock feeds, whatever. I only really use Netflix and VuDu in this section, but it allowed me to eliminate my Roku box and remote. When you already have a computer or laptop in the room, the Yahoo Widgets thing seems a little superfluous – this TV is NOT a replacement for a computer with internet by any means, but for some people, being able to quickly check the local weather or movie showings, etc. on the TV could be valuable.

The best part about the networking feature is that it will let you stream media from any computer on the network. You just need to install some included Nero software – which, by the way, is actually small, un-bloated and simple, unlike any other Nero product – and voila, your PC is a media server. You designate a folder (or however many you want) to be your media folder, you put videos, music or photos in it, and you can access them on the TV. It really works well and it’s very easy to do, literally just a few clicks of the remote. I found that even streaming a 1080p mkv file wirelessly from my PC worked fine and looked fantastic. There are a few caveats – for one, it only supports mp3 for music (why not FLAC, or iTunes format?). It supports a lot of video formats (mkv/mp4,avi, divx, and more), but not all of them, and even for supported formats it may be finicky with specific files. Usually, converting the file to another format will solve the issue and make it playable; this is annoying but it’s only happened a few times out of dozens of videos, for me. Occasionally, fast-forwarding or reversing through a video streamed from your PC can be confusing and slow (you backtrack 15 seconds, hit play, and it plays about 2 seconds before where you started). This and the other issue could have everything to do with improper video encoding, and nothing to do with the TV, I don’t know. But given that the TV will automatically update its firmware through the network, one might expect these bugs to be gradually worked out. Hopefully, they will even add support for more file formats with future updates; it’s just a matter of adding more codecs to the firmware, which seems like it should be easy to achieve.

The styling of the TV is subtle and not cheap-looking, unlike some brands (*cough*Vizio*cough*). It’s just a clean piano-black border around the picture, with a tasteful LED ‘bar’ light that stylishly fades from red to blue to indicate power. The stand is easy to assemble (just install some screws) and looks nice while supporting the TV adequately. The screen has a matte surface, so glare, while not totally eliminated, is not an issue. The typical buttons (power, channel, input) are on the right side, out of sight when viewing from the front. This TV has plenty of inputs – 4 HDMI, two component, two old A/V (the red, white and yellow kind), and normal cable input. It also has an optical audio output, which will let you consolidate all sources into one stream. This is great, because I no longer have to switch my AV Receiver between sources – cable, Blu Ray, VHS and Wii all go through the same input on my receiver.

There’s only one feature I really miss – the ability to control my receiver volume from the TV remote. My old tube TV remote could do this, so why not this new juggernaut? Like all flat TVs, the built-in speakers on this one are adequate but not much more. You’ll definitely want a home theater setup, or at least a simple receiver with a pair of speakers, to do the big, beautiful picture justice in the sound department. (BTW, Blu Ray looks stunning on this TV!)

I’m really quite delighted with the LG 42LD550. It’s one of the few major products/appliances I’ve owned that met and exceeded my expectations, and I have to dig pretty deeply to criticize it. Even these criticisms are happily brushed aside, given how much I like everything else. My only regret is not splurging on the 46-inch version. :)

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

40″ to 70″ Inch Tv Mount with Tilt Review

This mount is doing a fine job of holding a Samsung LN55C650 to my wall.

The hardware set supplied with the mount is very complete. Lots of spacers, expansion bolts (in case you’re mounting into concrete, plaster, etc.) and other stuff to ensure that most any large flat screen TV is properly taken care of.

Some tools to have ready are a pencil, a level, drill (3/8 bit for wall studs), large phillips screw driver, and a driver to make those 6 rather long bolts go into those holes you drilled. I would not have wanted to use a flat wrench.

This mount is a sturdy beast. Also, it was an easy attachment once the TV brackets were on the TV and the wall plate on the wall. I disobeyed the directions and lifted the TV and stuck it on the wall by myself. Absolutely no problem. The brackets just hooked on and that was pretty much it.

I appreciated the price tag too. There are a lot of thieves out there that want four times as much for a lesser piece of hardware. Even so, can also buy a DVD player and a couple DVDs. I hope wall mount prices drop a bit more.

Sony Bravia XBR KDL-46XBR8 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz Triluminos LED LCD HDTV Review

First off, OneCall and Conway delivery were excellent to deal with. As someone stated before in a previous review, I received an email, then a follow-up call after purchasing from Amazon. No problems with shipping either. Now for the TV… Back in December of last year, I had purchased a Vizio (551XVT) from Costco. I had that TV for 3 months, then returned it because it had “shadowing” on the screen. Basically, there was a blemish in the middle of my 55″ that I couldn’t tolerate since I shelled out 2K. It was a good TV, not great. I then decided to try an LG (55LH90) which was also a good TV, even better than the Vizio. I decided I was going to keep that until I saw this TV drop in price dramatically. Both of the previous Tv’s had the local dimming/backlit like this one, but the difference is Sony’s red, green and blue bulbs that I think make a difference in picture quality. Everyone’s taste is different and people will tell you that their TV rivals anyone else’s…blah, blah, blah. I’m not one to go and brag about a purchase, but I will tell you to check this TV out as it is worth the price. It’s two years old, but I can tell you it’s as good as the LCD’s/ Plasmas that are coming out today. I researched mainly LCD’s because glare is an issue in my living room. No problem there as this TV has a matte screen. Ironically, I was looking at the new models this year and many of them have the ultra-clear panel, which is glossy. I think the 3-d Tv’s are nice, but to me, if I’m going to watch 3-D, it will be in a theater, not in my home. Plus, there isn’t much content out right now to justify dropping 3-4k. Once I got this TV hooked up and got the settings to my liking, I was very impressed and happy that I waited. It probably won’t be in stores anymore as it is 2 years old. But, see for yourself, read all the other reviews and go to CNet too as they gave this TV a really good score. I am very picky and don’t have any quams about returning products if their not up to my standards. I ordered this blindly and would definately recommend it. PS3 and Hi-Def are gorgeous…

Sony Bravia XBR KDL-46XBR8 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz Triluminos LED LCD HDTV Overview

The Sony BRAVIA XBR8-Series HDTVs represent the next step forward for Sony HDTV technology. Underpinning this advance is the TRILUMINOS RGB Dynamic LED backlight, which utilizes clusters of red, green, and blue LEDs to produce accurate colors and an amazingly realistic image, and employs local dimming to dynamically adjust the brightness of LED clusters, allowing the XBR8 to display deep blacks alongside bright whites for enhanced image depth and exceptional shadow detail. Motionflow 120Hz PRO technology creates new frames to double the frame rate, then uses sequential scanning to enhance motion and deliver a smoother and clearer picture, and 24p True Cinema lets you experience a cinema-like experience. BRAVIA XBR8-Series HDTVs also feature the powerful BRAVIA Engine 2 PRO fully digital video processor, which creates sharp, crystal-clear images at any resolution, as well as advanced color reproduction technologies including 10-bit processing and a 10-bit panel, Live Color Creation, and x.v.Color capability. DMex functionality lets you expand the capabilities of the BRAVIA XBR8-Series with optional BRAVIA Link modules, including the BRAVIA Internet Video Link, BRAVIA Wireless Link, BRAVIA DVD Link, and BRAVIA Input Link (all sold separately). In addition, the exclusive Xross Media Bar (XMB) user interface, integrated TV Guide Interactive Program Guide, and BRAVIA Sync one-touch component control make the BRAVIA XBR8-Series HDTVs easy to use, and the large number of inputs offer you a wide range of connectivity options. BRAVIA XBR8-Series HDTVs also feature an RS-232C connection for integration into home automation systems. You can even customize the timeless design of the BRAVIA XBR8-Series by adding optional speaker grilles available in a selection of designer colors (sold separately)

Sony KDL-52W5150 – 52″ BRAVIA LCD TV – 120Hz – widescreen – 1080p (FullHD) – HDTV – black Review

My Sony 52W5150 is a thing of beauty! The pictures are fabulous and it looks great in the living room also. My old 60 Hz Sharp 46 inch cannot compare to this TV in terms of deep blacks and motion picture quality.

First, the pictures are amazing! The blacks are so ridiculously black… my biggest pet peeve on a HDTV is the greyish black when there’s supposed to be a black background on some older TV’s. You don’t have that problem with this TV. This TV has Bravia Engine 3 (Sony’s latest video processor) and has a 120 Hz refresh rate. Inbetween those two, the motion judder that I used to see on my old Sharp TV during fast action scenes in movies or sports are gone. All I see is smoothe motion which is a thing of beauty. Once you turn off the “Vivid” colors mode, the colors look real and true to life. I just love it. In fact, my wife told me how she noticed for the first time all the intricate details of the makeup on the TV news anchors’ faces. That’s high picture quality.

Second, it looks great in the room. I love the Sony light that comes on on the bottom center of the bezel when the TV is on. (In fairness, my wife hates it so be aware that all or most late model Sony HDTV’s have this feature) And it looks great whether it’s on or not… showing the deep blacks and the rich colors. It really does become the center of your family/living room entertainment. Some prefer the touch of color from Samsung… I prefer the all black look of my TV.

Finally, comparing the specs on this TV versus the top of the line Sony XBR9, there wasn’t enough difference to pay the extra 0 premium. Both TV’s have the same contrast ratios (3,800 native, 100,000 dynamic). For novices, the contrast ratio is a rough ratio of the brightness of the darkest color the TV is capable of versus the brightest color. So the higher the number, the more capable the TV is in terms of reproducing a wide range of colors at a wide range of brightness. They also look very similar, both use the latest Bravia 3 Engine video processor to produce their pictures, have the same # of HD ports, and allow for widgets & broadband access to Internet.

The three major differences are the following: 1) 120 Hz vs. 240 Hz refresh rate, 2) 8 bit versus 10 bit panel, and 3) of course the 0 or so in price premium. Frankly, my research into 120 Hz vs. 240 Hz refresh rates lead me to conclusion that most people can’t really notice the difference. People can notice the difference between 120 Hz and 60 Hz (as I pointed out earlier), but the 120 vs. 240 seems much more marginal. I am not such a videophile that I will pay a serious premium for a marginal difference. Then the 8 bit vs. the 10 bit panel is an even more dubious distinction. 8 bit panels allow for 17 million colors… the 10 bit panels allow a billion in theory…. But you don’t really need it. That’s because no content source available right now (not blue ray, not HD broadcast, HD cable/satellite) can differentiate colors to that degree and no LCD panel can reproduce that many colors at once. My advice is – save your money and buy the 10 bit panels when the content actually catches up. Buying 10 bit panel right now could be like buying a 50 inch plasma TV in 2000 for like K when no real HD content sources were available to take advantage of the big screen & TV capability.

The only thing this TV does not have is LED backlighting. This TV and the XBR9 are Sony’s best CCFL backlit LCD TV’s. Now the latest TV’s have started to use LED backlighting technology to really hike up the contrast ratio to 1 million to 1 and beyond. Sony’s latest release XBR10 does this as do the Samsung B6000, B7000, B8000, and B8500 series TV’s. Those TV’s are fabulous TV’s, and they look so cool with their super thin form factor (Samsung’s are 1.2 inches thick!). But I am not prepared to pay double or even triple the cost of my W series to get a similar sized LED backlit LCD TV just yet. Wait 3 years and the prices will be MUCH cheaper, since by then larger screen true LED TV’s called OLED (not the LCD with LED backlighting TV’s that are available now) will probably be more widely available.

By the way, the Samsung TV most comparable to this TV is the Samsung 52B650. Both are 120 Hz, near top of line TV’s with CCFL backlighting. I could have gone with either, but I ended up going with this TV because I got a great deal on it and because my sound system and blue ray player (PS3) are Sony products – hello Bravia Synch. Some do think the picture quality on the Samsung is slightly better… but I found the differences to be virtually indiscernable to my eyes. Can’t go wrong with either as Samsung and Sony are, IMO, the two greatest LCD TV makers right now… but Samsung seems to be pulling ahead lately.

Overall, fabulous TV… well worth the costs. One of the best top tier, large screen size TV’s available with CCFL backlighting. LED backlighting is better, but it costs over double. So for non-early adopters, this is the way to go.

Immerse yourself in outstanding color reproduction and 1080p picture quality with the KDL-40V3000 LCD Flat Panel HDTV. BRAVIA V-Series televisions are where Full HD 1080 starts. Performance functions like Live Color Creation and the 10-bit panel display assure picture quality, while BRAVIA Theatre Sync offers easy one-button operation for enjoying a Sony A/V system. Add a sparkling new black picture frame design, quiet operation, and you have the new BRAVIA V-Series HDTV.

Full HD 1080p Resolution
When it comes to high-definition TV the pinnacle of performance is achieved by using 1920 x 1080 display panels. And BRAVIA V-Series televisions have them. Full HD 1920 x 1080 panel resolution with over 2 million pixels8 (more than twice that of 720p HDTV) is exactly what you need to reproduce the 1080p content that can be delivered by our cutting edge 1080p Blu-ray disc player. And working with BRAVIA Engine EX everything from standard definition and high definition is upconverted to 1080p6 for a picture so real it’s like you’re actually there.

10-bit Processing and 10-bit Display
While it’s great to state that a TV is capable of creating billions of colors it’s a whole lot better when you have a display that can actually display them. That’s the logic behind Sony’s 10-bit processor and 10-bit display. Sony follows 10-bit processing with a 10-bit panel, allowing 64 times the levels of color expression than an 8-bit panel. What that translates to is smoother transitions from color to color and subtle color changes faithfully reproduced.

BRAVIA Engine EX Full Digital Video Processor
The BRAVIA Engine EX full digital video processing system is based on Sony’s renowned BRAVIA Engine video processing system. It has all of the same functions of BRAVIA Engine plus the added ability to upconvert 480i standard definition signals via Digital Reality Creation Multi Function v1.0 technology for a picture with more detail and definition.

Live Color Creation System featuring WCG-CCFL
Decades of television know how allow us to realize that an LCD TV is more than just the panel; it’s actually a system. Uncompromised picture quality starts with combining carefully chosen components and circuits to optimize system quality, among these are the color creation and processing functions. That’s what Live Color Creation technology is all about. It starts with the BRAVIA Engine EX video processing system, which enhances primary colors and corrects half-tone colors for natural overall color. Next, a WCG-CCFL backlight using Sony’s phosphor formula delivers a specific spectrum of light designed to work with our specially formulated color filters. The combination of these three components creates deep, deep blues and natural greens for overall colors that draw you right into the picture.

Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE) Function
Sony’s Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE) builds on our excellent on-contrast ratio performance of 1600:11. A Dynamic Contrast Ratio of up to 13,000:12 is achieved by using real-time image processing to adjust the contrast along with optimizing backlight levels. But rather than focus on the “numbers”, Sony focuses on actual picture performance avoiding exaggerated blacks where detail can be lost. ACE translates to blacker blacks in darker scenes, as well as better shadow detail in other scenes for a difference that you can see.

24p True Cinema (24p Input Capability)
Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sonywisely takes advantage of this by including 24p output capability on their BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc player. It makes sense that select 2007 BRAVIA TVs will include 24p input capability. The benefit? Images are smooth and natural looking. Once you experience 24p video it will be hard to view video without it.

DMex – Ready (Digital Module Extender)
Sony’s Digital Media Extender (DMex) ready televisions offer a digital connection path for the addition of optional modules like the new BRAVIA Internet Video Link.7 With innovative DMex expansion capabilities featuring the Emmy award winning XMB user interface, select 2007 models are not merely TVs, but powerful entertainment platforms that not only meet your needs today, but expand easily to meet tomorrow’s needs as well.

Xross Media Bar (XMB)
When was the last time you saw an on-screen display that was fast, fun and easy to use? Sony’s award-winning Xross Media Bar (pronounced Cross) interface provides a logical and fast way to access set up menus, user controls, and more. The on-screen display comes to life by pushing the XMB menu button on the remote. Navigation through the menus is smooth and fast.

BRAVIA Theatre Sync
Sony created BRAVIA Theatre Sync to go beyond basic digital audio and video transmission. Based on the HDMI-CEC function. BRAVIA Theatre Sync will be included on select BRAVIA Theatre home A/V systems and components. This useful function reduces the hassle and time consuming job of powering up, routing signals, etc. to the simple push of one button. Sony calls this nifty feature BRAVIA Theatre Sync. Here’s how it works. Want to play a DVD on your Sony A/V system? Easy, just push PLAY on the BRAVIA HDTV remote and everything is taken care of for you. Even when the system is off! Want to change from TV sound to digital surround sound through your Sony BRAVIA Theatre A/V system? Just one push of the Theater Sound button on the remote and voila, surround sound through your system. Want to power down everything once you’ve finished enjoying it? Push one button and the TV and A/V system powers down. BRAVIA Theatre Sync helps make things a whole lot easier to operate.

S-Force Front Surround-2
Built around a sophisticated set of Sony algorithms, the S-Force Front Surround enhancement function generates realistic surround sound from the two speakers in the TV. Unlike some other “virtual surround” technologies, sound does not need to be bounced off of side walls or other surfaces to hear three-dimensional sound. No matter what the size or shape of the room it’s possible to hear sounds from behind you.

HDMI and PC Connectivity
Designed for maximum versatility, Sony’s BRAVIA V-Series LCD TVs are equipped with a comprehensive range of input interfaces. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. HDMI technology supports enhanced or High Definition video, together with multi-channel digital audio to provide superb image and sound reproduction. BRAVIA V-Series TVs include (3) HDMI 1080/60p inputs. The PC input 4(HD-15-pin) offers easy connection to your PC, allowing you to use your high resolution BRAVIA V-Series Digital TV as a computer monitor.

ATSC Integrated Tuner
Receive local, over-the-air digital broadcasts of high-definition network programming; no set top box or monthly fee required.

VESA-compatible Mounting Holes
Free up space. Mount your television on the wall with confidence; attaches to optional VESA-compatible wall-mounting brackets (sold separately).

x.v.Color technology
BRAVIA HDTV’s performance has now advanced to the point that the color range can be defined by limitations in the original video source, rather than the TV. Thanks to the adoption of a newly approved international color standard called xvYCC (an option in the HDMI v1.3 spec and which Sony participated in creating), the color space has been greatly expanded. 1.8 times as many natural colors as existing HDTV signals will now be faithfully reproduced. x.v.Color is the name Sony has chosen to promote video products that include xvYCC capability. x.v.Color enabled products can now offer more accurate color reproduction and natural colors.

Sony BRAVIA EX 400 Series 40-Inch LCD TV, Black Review

It took me three months to pay for this, actually had it on layaway at my local Sears for that long. Originally I was going to go for two others TVs before this one until a gentleman who works there, went by the name of Peter, directed me towards this TV. As soon as I saw it, and saw the picture clarity in comparison to the Sharp Aquos as well as other TVs of similar size and specs, I knew this was the TV for me. Most of the other TVs looked washed out compared to this thing, so it was no contest.

Anyway, I finally got this thing home, eventually set it up on a wall mount I got off of here for cheap, and it’s been a fantastic TV. Much, MUCH improved over my old standard-def TV, which was given to a friend afterward BTW. The picture quality is superb, the colours are rich and vibrant, no motion blur, no slowdown, no lag, none of the problems that apparently seems to plague most TVs with the 60Hz specs. Even standard-def cable looks fantastic on this beast, and that’s saying something right there. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with this as a sports game TV at all if you want to primarily use it for that. However, the real star of the show is gaming. Especially with HDMI cables, which is a must, fortunately you can get them for crazy cheap nowadays.

As one other reviewer said, games have never looked better. Like him, I sat there for at least 5 – 10 minutes drooling after booting up Killzone 2 on my PS3. I was absolutely amazed at how good everything looked, and that’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Being able to read the text on Star Ocean: The Last Hope International and not having everything blur on me or having my eyes hurt for that matter, when using the classic Anime look of that game was astounding to say the least. Super Street Fighter IV, which is fast and frantic, ran without missing a single beat. Then there was Forza Motorsport 3 on the 360? Jaw-dropping to say the least. Same with Mass Effect, was amazing to see the text on screen whereas before I simply could not do so only downer was the slowdown but I feel that was due to in-game programming as opposed to my TV as the slowdown has only happened with this game alone. While I am sure other HDTVs would do the same thing, could they do so with the same quality? I can answer with doubtful.

The only weak point is the sound, which is decent enough, it gets the job done but nothing more. There’s nothing special about it, I’d say if you can, hook it up to a good surround sound speaker system. You’ll most likely get better sound quality, and you’ll be able to enjoy the fantastic picture quality this badboy has to offer. All in all, this is really a fantastic TV with so much bang for the buck that it’s unreal. You won’t be disappointed if you decide to get this badboy. I am so glad I did, I could not be happier as a gamer.
